Refuge Eastside Foothills

This exquisite home, seamlessly incorporating design elements ranging from traditional to contemporary, is nestled within the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and has a commanding view of the Jemez Mountains to the west, with downtown Santa Fe in the distant foreground.

The placement of the house within the steep, ponderosa covered hillside, is mediated by a series of curvilinear retaining walls that define the driveway, stairs and a number of landscaped terraces. Projecting out of the circular walls ascends the rectilinear massing’s of the house itself, creating intriguing interplays between the various curves and rectangles. A slot of water bifurcates the plan, drawing the eye out toward the view. A cylindrical guesthouse, with rooftop walking deck, prominently tops off the composition with its placement at the highest point on the site.
